By 1894, the first store was opened by William Wilson, and Clever had its first post office by 1896. The name ‘Clever’ was chosen after the original post office name was rejected; a customer suggested it as the community was known for its friendly and wise residents.
Clever’s growth was slow but steady. By 1904, a tomato-canning factory was established, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the area, further integrating Clever into the larger economic framework of Missouri. This small town continued its development, eventually becoming the charming city it is today, while still maintaining its historical roots.
