Clever

Welcome to Clever, a small but historically rich city located in Christian County, Missouri. Located on the Springfield Plateau of the Missouri Ozarks, Clever’s history is a fascinating tapestry of growth and change, rooted deeply in the broader narrative of the American Midwest.

The land that would become Clever saw its first inhabitants long before Missouri became a state in 1821. However, it wasn’t until 1834 that a U.S. Government land survey was conducted, paving the way for the first recorded land transaction in 1845. The burgeoning settlement began to take shape with the construction of the Old Wire Road, which followed the ancient Great Osage Trail. This road was crucial, not only for the movement of settlers but also for the Butterfield Overland Mail Route from 1858 to 1861, which passed just north of Clever, providing a vital communication link during its time.

One of Clever’s early brushes with history came during the Civil War. On August 2, 1861, the Battle of Dug Springs took place nearby, marking the first significant conflict between Union and Confederate forces in Missouri. Despite being outnumbered, the Union forces led by General Nathaniel Lyon emerged victorious, setting the stage for the larger and more famous Battle of Wilson’s Creek just days later.

The post-war period saw the foundation of Clever at a crossroads created by a road from Springfield to Billings, Missouri. Farmer Ike Teague constructed a two-story home around 1890, which later became a central point for the budding community. By 1894, the first store was opened by William Wilson, and Clever had its first post office by 1896. The name ‘Clever’ was chosen after the original post office name was rejected; a customer suggested it as the community was known for its friendly and wise residents.

Clever’s growth was slow but steady. By 1904, a tomato-canning factory was established, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the area, further integrating Clever into the larger economic framework of Missouri. This small town continued its development, eventually becoming the charming city it is today, while still maintaining its historical roots.

Clever’s past is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people, from its origins as a strategic intersection to a thriving community. Visitors to Clever can still sense the echoes of its historical journey as they explore the area.
