Welcome to the enigmatic Château d’Arginy, a majestic medieval castle steeped in history and legend. Located in the commune of Charentay in the picturesque Rhône department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, this castle is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the 14th century.
Originally constructed in the mid-1300s, the Château d’Arginy was founded after the Beaujeu family sold the property to Guillaume du Vernet, a notable figure from Montbrison. It remained in the du Vernet family until the 15th century, after which it passed through various hands. This castle is a quintessential example of the building styles prevalent in the northern Lyonnais and Dombes regions, characterized by its two concentric enclosures. The outer enclosure, with its quadrangular design and circular turrets, provided robust defenses. The inner enclosure, though partially lost to time, still retains its medieval charm with surviving turrets and a striking brick master tower.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Château d’Arginy is its association with the Knights Templar, a legendary order of warrior monks. According to local lore, the last Grand Master of the Templars, Jacques de Molay, entrusted his nephew Guichard de Beaujeu with hiding the Templar treasure within the castle’s confines. Though this treasure has never been found, the legend persists, adding an aura of mystery to the estate.
In the 20th century, French esotericist Jacques Breyer was drawn to the château’s enigmatic history. Breyer claimed to have mystical experiences within its walls and believed he had uncovered documents linking the site to the origins of the Knights Templar. His claims, though controversial, sparked a resurgence of neo-Templar movements, known as the ‘Arginy Renaissance.’
Today, Château d’Arginy stands as a partial historic monument, with its facades, roofs, and moat protected by national decree since 1974. It continues to captivate visitors with its tales of chivalry, mystery, and the enduring quest for hidden treasures.
