Château Cos Labory

Welcome to Château Cos Labory, a historic vineyard nestled in the prestigious Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France. This estate has been a significant player in the history of Bordeaux winemaking since its establishment in the early 19th century. The name ‘Cos Labory’ derives from its geographical location on the gravelly hill of Cos and its first owner, François Labory, who managed the estate from 1800 until 1845.

In 1855, Château Cos Labory was classified as a Fifth Growth in the famous Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, a testament to its quality and reputation at the time. This classification was part of a broader effort by Emperor Napoleon III to showcase Bordeaux’s finest wines at the Paris Exposition.

The estate’s history is intertwined with notable figures such as Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, the founder of the neighboring Château Cos d’Estournel. D’Estournel purchased Cos Labory in 1847, briefly uniting the two estates. However, financial difficulties led to its sale in 1852, and it became independently owned once more.

Fast forward to the 20th century, the Audoy family acquired the estate, nurturing its vineyards and producing wines that maintained the château’s reputable status in Bordeaux. In 2023, a new chapter began when Michel Reybier, a prominent figure in the wine and hospitality industry, purchased the estate. Reybier’s acquisition is driven by a desire to preserve the estate’s heritage while elevating its winemaking excellence.

Today, Château Cos Labory is known for its unique terroir, benefiting from the moderating influences of the nearby Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. The vineyards, averaging 38 years in age, are predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Visitors to the estate can witness the meticulous care taken to craft wines that reflect the character and history of this storied land.
