Caseville’s story begins in 1836 when it was first settled by Reuben Dodge. Originally known as the Pigeon River Settlement, the area quickly developed around its natural resources. The settlement was later renamed Port Elizabeth and Elizabethtown, in honor of Elizabeth Rattle, before finally becoming Caseville, named after Leonard Case, a major landowner who played a key role in the area’s development.
In its early days, Caseville thrived on the lumber industry, with timber being shipped across the lake to various markets. Shipbuilding and salt manufacturing were also integral industries that contributed to its growth. By 1856, Francis Crawford purchased a significant portion of land from Leonard Case, further shaping the community’s future.
Caseville’s evolution is marked by its incorporation as a village in 1896, and later as a city in 2010. Throughout its growth, Caseville has become a beloved summer destination, particularly noted for its annual Cheeseburger in Caseville festival. This 10-day celebration, inspired by Jimmy Buffett’s song “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” began in 1999 and has since attracted visitors from all over.
Today, Caseville is also celebrated as the “Perch Capital of Michigan,” drawing fishing enthusiasts eager to catch the native yellow perch. The pier offers an ideal spot to cast a line or simply take in the stunning views of Saginaw Bay.
