Brooke County Museum

Welcome to the Brooke County Historical Museum and Cultural Center in Wellsburg, West Virginia. This unique museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of Brooke County, where each display tells a story of a bygone era.

Founded in 1969, the museum began its journey in the former county jail, repurposed by the Brooke County Historical Society with permission from the county commission. In 1975, the West Virginia Legislature passed a bill allowing county-funded museums, and Brooke County was the first to establish such an institution, marking a significant milestone in preserving local history. By 1973, the museum had moved to the historic Miller’s Tavern, a building with its own storied past, having served riverboat travelers along the Ohio River.

In 2012, the museum found its current home in the former G.C. Murphy Store, thanks to a grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. This location not only provided more space but also an unexpected advantage—former telemarketer cubicles were repurposed to recreate historical settings, such as a one-room schoolhouse and kitchens from the 1790s and 1920s.

Inside, visitors can explore the lives of Brooke County residents across centuries. The museum’s military exhibits are particularly poignant, reflecting the county’s strong tradition of military service. These displays honor local veterans and feature uniforms, maps, and personal stories from all branches of the military.

The museum is not only a repository of history but also a community hub, offering free group or individual tours from April through October. It houses a stage and community room for local events, further cementing its role as a cultural cornerstone in Wellsburg.

As you walk through the museum, imagine the voices of the past echoing through the halls, each artifact a testament to the lives and events that shaped this vibrant community.
