The hippo lay in two pieces in the back lot, alongside an elephant that was beyond saving. Recognizing its charm, Bud placed the hippo in front of his shop, Glass Solutions, where it quickly became a favorite of the Edmond community.
Happy’s story is not without adventure. In the early 1990s, local high school students from Edmond Memorial High School executed the first of many hippo-nappings, transporting the hippo to the roof of their gymnasium. These playful pranks continued over the years, with students from rival schools and even fraternity members at Oklahoma Christian University getting in on the fun. Despite these escapades, Happy often returned home with a few bumps and scrapes, requiring repairs and a secure mounting.
