Aquarium of the Pacific

Welcome to the Aquarium of the Pacific, a captivating gateway to the wonders of the world’s largest ocean. Established in June 1998, this vibrant institution is nestled on a six-acre site in Long Beach, California. As Southern California’s largest aquarium, it provides a window into the diverse ecosystems of the Pacific Ocean. The Aquarium of the Pacific is more than just a place to observe marine life; it is a hub for education, conservation, and community engagement.

The Aquarium was founded with a mission to instill a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean and its inhabitants. Its galleries transport visitors through various aquatic environments, from the frigid waters of the Northern Pacific to the vibrant coral reefs of the Tropical Pacific. The Aquarium is home to approximately 12,000 animals across more than 100 exhibits, drawing in about 1.6 million visitors each year.

Key figures in the Aquarium’s history include its founding board members, who envisioned a place where people could connect with ocean science and conservation. Over the years, the Aquarium has continually evolved, adding new exhibits and educational programs. In 2019, it unveiled the Pacific Visions wing, a two-story structure that features an immersive theater and interactive exhibits focused on pressing environmental issues.

The Aquarium of the Pacific plays a significant role in conservation efforts, such as breeding endangered species and participating in community science initiatives. It also hosts cultural festivals and educational programs that engage and inspire diverse communities.

Throughout its history, the Aquarium has been a leader in sustainability, being the first among US aquariums to register its greenhouse gases and earning numerous awards for its environmental practices. Its commitment to sustainability is further highlighted by the LEED Platinum certification of its Premier Watershed Classroom and the Two Green Globes certification of the Pacific Visions wing.

As you explore the Aquarium, you’ll not only witness the beauty of marine life but also become part of a larger narrative of ocean stewardship and conservation.
