The story begins in the early 19th century with the Rancho Rinconada de Los Gatos, a land grant given to Jose Hernandez and Sebastian Peralta. On these grounds, they constructed an adobe house, marking the first structure in the area. This foundational moment set the tone for a site that would witness numerous transformations over the years.
In the late 19th century, the South Pacific Coast Railroad became a defining feature of the region. It ran along the western edge of what is now Vasona Lake County Park, connecting the area to downtown Los Gatos and further afield to Santa Cruz. The railroad’s presence was pivotal, shaping transportation and commerce in the region. Notably, this line was later acquired by the Southern Pacific Railroad and converted to standard gauge, illustrating the continuous evolution of infrastructure here.
The name ‘Vasona’ carries a personal touch, stemming from Albert August Vollmer, who requested a flag stop near his farm to board the train more conveniently. He named it after his favorite childhood pony, embedding a piece of his personal history into the park’s legacy.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and the park’s landscape took on new life with the establishment of Sun Ray Dairy by José Pereira Alvernaz in 1933. Alvernaz, an immigrant from the Azores, became a cherished community member, known for his generosity during the Great Depression. His dairy, located on what is now parkland, was a cornerstone of local sustenance and community support.
The park itself officially came into existence following the construction of the Vasona Dam in 1934, which created the reservoir around which the park is centered. Over the years, Vasona Lake County Park has grown into a beloved recreational spot, offering activities like picnicking, boating, and hiking.
