The atmosphere was festive until someone falsely shouted ‘fire,’ causing a panic-stricken stampede down the building’s steep staircase. Tragically, the doors at the bottom opened inward, exacerbating the crush and leading to the loss of many lives, including 59 children.
The tragedy at Italian Hall occurred during a time of intense labor unrest in the Copper Country of Michigan. The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, a major employer in the region, was embroiled in a strike that had begun in July 1913.
