Welcome to Comptche, a unique locality with a rich tapestry of history and culture, nestled among the redwoods of Mendocino County, California. This small community, although not widely known, has played host to significant historical events and notable personalities.
In the early 1970s, Comptche was a haven for creative souls, including professional musicians like Booker T. Jones. Jones, along with his in-laws, Dick and Charlotte Coolidge, purchased land in the area. Dick, a skilled carpenter and Baptist preacher, built homes for his family, and his sermons at the Grange Hall became legendary in the community. His engaging ‘chalk talks’ and Charlotte’s beautiful piano playing attracted a diverse audience, including curious hippies.
Comptche was a melting pot of religious beliefs during this time, with New Age spirituality gaining traction among residents. The Coolidges, however, were committed to fostering a Christian community, eventually leading to the construction of the Chapel of the Redwoods Baptist Church in the late 1970s. This building, constructed entirely by volunteer labor, stands as a testament to the community’s collaborative spirit.
Comptche’s history also includes tales of survival and resilience, such as during the massive 1931 fire that swept through the area. Residents like Charlotte Layton faced the flames with courage, and thanks to defensible spaces and community effort, many lives were saved, though much was lost.
This locality has evolved over time, maintaining its rural charm while embracing the diverse beliefs and backgrounds of its inhabitants. Today, Comptche is a reminder of the power of community, where relationships and shared experiences shape its ongoing story.
