Clare Area Chamber of Commerce

Welcome to Clare, Michigan, a city that proudly carries the legacy of its Irish namesake, County Clare. Founded in 1870 with the arrival of the Pere Marquette Railroad, Clare quickly became a vital hub, earning the nickname ‘Crossroads of Michigan.’ Its strategic location at the intersection of major highways and railroads facilitated trade and travel throughout the state.

The city was named after Clare County, which was itself named after County Clare in Ireland, reflecting the heritage of many of the early settlers. Clare’s post office was established on January 20, 1871, marking the beginning of its formal development. By 1879, Clare had incorporated as a village and later, in 1891, as a city.

One of the city’s most charming historical landmarks is the Clare Downtown Historic District, which showcases the architectural styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Another notable site is the Clare Congregational Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as a testament to the city’s rich cultural and religious history.

Over the years, Clare evolved from a small railroad town to a vibrant community known for its festivals and small-town charm. The city is affectionately dubbed the ‘Gateway to the North’ and ‘City of Festivals,’ reflecting its spirited community life and welcoming atmosphere. A modern-day highlight is Cops & Doughnuts, a bakery owned by local police officers, which occupies the historic Clare City Bakery building dating back to 1896.

Clare’s location near Lake Shamrock and the Tobacco River offers residents and visitors beautiful natural landscapes and recreational opportunities. The city’s blend of history, culture, and natural beauty continues to draw people to this unique Michigan destination.
