In 1902, Augustus Franklin Crail established his homestead in what is now Big Sky’s Meadow. This early settlement laid the groundwork for the community that would develop over the next century. For decades, the region remained a quiet haven for ranchers, maintaining a small population and an intimate connection with the land.
The transformation of Big Sky into a renowned destination began in 1973 when NBC newscaster Chet Huntley realized his dream of opening Big Sky Resort. Huntley’s vision was to turn Lone Mountain into a ski mountain, a dream he pursued until his death in 1974. Though he never saw it completed, his legacy lived on. In 1976, Boyne USA Resorts purchased the mountain, and Big Sky began its journey toward becoming a premier skiing destination.
A significant milestone in Big Sky’s evolution was the construction of the Lone Peak Tram in 1995, which expanded the resort’s vertical drop to an impressive 4,180 feet. The area’s appeal continued to grow, and in 2003, the opening of Moonlight Basin on the north side of Lone Peak further solidified Big Sky’s reputation. By 2006, the collaboration between these resorts offered the Lone Peak Ticket, creating the largest skiing area in America with over 5,500 acres of combined trails.
Despite its growth, Big Sky remains a community that cherishes its small-town roots. With a year-round population of about 2,200 residents, it retains a sense of authenticity and warmth. The influx of seasonal workers and vacationers during the winter months brings plenty of activity, yet the slopes never feel overcrowded.
