Welcome to the Berrien County Historical Association, a place where the rich tapestry of Michigan’s past is preserved and celebrated. Established in 1968, the Association’s primary mission was to save the historic 1839 County Courthouse. This courthouse, the oldest of its kind in Michigan, is a testament to the area’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage. Over time, the site expanded to include four additional buildings, now collectively known as the History Center at Courthouse Square.
The courthouse’s story begins in 1839 with its very first case, which involved the theft of boots, gloves, and a hat—a case that set the stage for its long judicial history. Though it ceased functioning as a courthouse in 1894 when the county seat moved to St. Joseph, the building found new life through various uses, including as an armory and a classroom for Andrews University, before finally becoming a museum in 1967.
Today, the History Center consists of several historically significant structures. The Murdock Log House, one of the oldest two-story wooden structures in Berrien County, offers a glimpse into pioneer life. Bennett’s Forge, a working blacksmith shop, provides demonstrations of blacksmithing, an essential trade in early American life.
The Association has played a crucial role in connecting the community with its past, offering educational programs, lectures, and special events. These initiatives not only highlight the history of Berrien County but also its connection to broader historical narratives, such as the Underground Railroad and the development of the Great Lakes region.
