In the early 20th century, this area was not a park but a bustling migrant labor camp, one of the largest in the region. Known as ‘Mexican Town’ or the ‘Chihuahua District,’ it was home to thousands of Mexican migrants and braceros. These workers, drawn by the promise of opportunity, contributed immensely to the local economy by working in nearby cotton fields and on railroad lines. The community was strong but faced significant challenges, including overcrowding and poor living conditions, which were exacerbated during the Great Depression.
Despite these hardships, the residents of the camp forged a tight-knit community. However, life was not easy. Discrimination and segregation were harsh realities that many faced when venturing outside the camp. Yet, the spirit of the people remained unbroken, and they continued to contribute to the cultural tapestry of Lubbock.
In 1970, a severe tornado ravaged the area, destroying much of the neighborhood. However, from this destruction rose Aztlan Park, a tribute to the enduring spirit and contributions of the Tejano community in Lubbock. The park now stands as a symbol of cultural pride and history.
