This park owes its existence to the vision and generosity of Colonel Edward Deeds and his wife, Edith Walton Deeds. Edith, inspired by the carillon music she experienced in Bruges, Belgium, dreamed of bringing this musical wonder to her community. Her dream became a reality when Deeds Carillon was constructed in 1942, standing at 151 feet tall as Ohio’s largest carillon.
Colonel Edward Deeds was a prominent industrialist and inventor, closely associated with other Dayton luminaries like Charles Kettering and Orville Wright. His contributions to the community were immense, including co-founding DELCO and leading the Miami Conservancy District after the devastating Great 1913 Flood. His efforts helped protect Dayton from future flood disasters, showcasing his commitment to innovation and community welfare.
Carillon Historical Park is not just a tribute to Deeds’ legacy but a celebration of Dayton’s pivotal role in the industrial and technological advancements that shaped the 20th century. Among the park’s many attractions is the Wright Brothers Aviation Center, which houses the 1905 Wright Flyer III, the world’s first practical airplane.
