The Bloedorn family’s story in Fort Morgan begins with five ambitious brothers: Charles, Walter, John H. (better known as J.H.), Alvin, and Howard. In 1919, they founded the Farmers State Bank of Fort Morgan and the Bloedorn Lumber Company. These enterprises significantly contributed to the economic landscape of the Great Plains. The bank, at 300 Main Street, remained the largest in Northeast Colorado for decades.
J.H. and his brother Howard not only managed the bank but also engaged in various civic and philanthropic endeavors. Their influence is still felt today through the Bloedorn Foundation, established in 1959, which continues to support educational and enrichment opportunities in Morgan County.
A highlight of the district is the stately Georgian-revival home at 440 Sherman Street, built in 1926 for J.H. and his wife, Corliss. This house, now part of the Sherman Street Historic District, stands as a testament to the Bloedorn family’s lasting impact on the community.
