Schmidt Building, stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant past and the entrepreneurial spirit of its founder, Fritz T. Schmidt. Built in 1896, this three-plus story structure was originally home to the wine and liquor business known as Fritz T. Schmidt and Sons. They crafted their own wine at a place called ‘Blackhawk Vineyards’, located along Blackhawk Creek. This location was not just a business hub but also a family legacy, as Fritz’s family home and some of the vineyard buildings still stand today.
As you gaze upon the Schmidt Block, notice the striking Romanesque Revival architectural style, characterized by large round-arched windows and a robust red stone facade. This design was inspired by the works of Henry Hobson Richardson and is unique in Davenport for its stone construction. The swag embellishments on the frieze are particularly interesting, showcasing an Adamesque style rather than the typical Romanesque.
During the Prohibition era, the Schmidt family transitioned from liquor to real estate and insurance, showcasing their adaptability in changing times. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the building underwent another transformation, housing the upscale restaurant J.K. Frizbee’s. Today, it continues to serve the community as home to Duck City, an upscale dining establishment, complete with a sheltered outdoor seating area that offers a lovely view of the adjacent urban park.
