Established in 2005, this memorial is the only one in Ohio officially recognized by Ohio House Resolution 30 to honor all Ohio military personnel killed in action since the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
The memorial was born out of a collective desire to create a permanent tribute to Ohio’s fallen heroes. The land for the memorial was generously designated by the Village of Sunbury, situated near the geographical center of Ohio, making it accessible to people from across the state. Designed by the noted architect George Parker, the memorial stands as a testament to the dedication of the many volunteers and donors whose contributions have made this site possible.
Here, you will find white marble markers, each one representing an Ohio service member who died in the line of duty while deployed in combat zones. The simplicity and purity of the marble symbolize the courage and sacrifice of those who served. Each year, the memorial holds a special ceremony on the Saturday closest to September 11 to remember and honor these heroes.
