Welcome to the Kansas Aviation Museum, a landmark of aviation history nestled in the heart of Wichita, Kansas. The story of this fascinating place begins in 1927 when the city of Wichita purchased 640 acres of buffalo grass sod to develop what would become the Wichita Municipal Airport. The original terminal was constructed in the elegant Art Deco style, a testament to the era’s architectural flair, and officially opened its doors in 1935.
During the 1940s, the Wichita Municipal Airport became one of the busiest airports in the United States, bustling with a constant stream of commercial flights. The airport didn’t just serve civilian purposes; it played a crucial role during World War II. The U.S. military added new wings to the terminal to oversee airplane production at nearby Boeing and Spearman Company facilities. The significance of this site continued as it transformed into McConnell Air Force Base in 1951, serving as a training ground for pilots.
In 1984, after decades of military use, the old terminal found a new purpose. The Wichita Aeronautical Historical Association (WAHA) envisioned it as a museum to celebrate aviation’s rich history. By 1988, the city of Wichita had leased the property to WAHA, and passionate volunteers transformed it into the Kansas Aviation Museum we see today.
