Welcome to Dunbar School, a landmark of historical and cultural significance in Tucson, Arizona. Founded in January 1918, Dunbar School is named after Paul Laurence Dunbar, a celebrated African-American poet whose legacy of eloquence and cultural advocacy continues to inspire. This school served as the first and only segregated educational institution for African-American students in Tucson, providing education from first through ninth grades.
For over three decades, Dunbar School was a pivotal educational hub for the African-American community, shaping the minds of young students during a time when segregation was a harsh reality. In 1951, the school transitioned to John Spring Junior High School as Arizona’s school systems were desegregated, reflecting a significant shift in the social landscape.
Today, the Dunbar Pavilion stands as a testament to resilience and cultural heritage. It serves as an African-American Arts and Culture Center, aiming to foster understanding and celebrate the contributions of African-Americans throughout Tucson’s history. This transformation was made possible by the efforts of the Dunbar Coalition, which purchased the building in 1995 with the vision of creating a vibrant cultural center.
The Pavilion houses the Dunbar Barber Academy and the Barbea Williams Dance Academy Company, among other cultural and educational initiatives. It also hosts Tucson’s Black Film Club, which screens films every quarter, further enriching the cultural fabric of the community. The ongoing renovation and revitalization efforts spearheaded by Debi Chess Mabie, the Community Impact Fellow from the University of Arizona College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, ensure that the Pavilion remains a dynamic space for cultural exchange and community empowerment.
