Welcome to the Dodd Ford Historic Bridge, a significant piece of Minnesota’s engineering history. Spanning the Blue Earth River near Amboy, this bridge is a remarkable example of early 20th-century bridge design. Constructed in 1901, the Dodd Ford Bridge is a steel, pin-connected Pratt through-truss bridge, characterized by its distinctive camelback configuration. This engineering marvel was the work of Lawrence Henry Johnson, a prominent bridge builder of the late 19th and early 20th century. Johnson was known for his innovative designs, and the Dodd Ford Bridge stands as one of only two surviving examples of his work.
The bridge was commissioned by the Blue Earth County Board of Commissioners to replace a ford in the river that often posed a challenge for vehicular traffic. At the time, bridge construction was dominated by Minneapolis companies, but it was Johnson’s competitive bid that won the contract. The completion of the bridge was a vital development for the local community, connecting the growing city of Amboy with the surrounding farming areas.
Over the years, the bridge has undergone several renovations to preserve its historic character while accommodating modern traffic needs. Most notably, in 2016, the bridge was rehabilitated with new abutments and support beams to ensure its longevity. Today, it stands as a testament to the region’s rich history of transportation development during the Progressive Era, showcasing the innovative spirit of its time.
