Welcome to the Danby Village Historic District, a place rich with history and stories from the past. Situated in the scenic town of Danby, Vermont, this historic district is a treasure trove of 19th-century architecture and tales from a bygone era.
The village of Danby began its journey in the late 18th century, with the area that is now Danby Village being settled around 1800. Initially overshadowed by the more central Danby Corners, it was here that some of the town’s early mills were established, laying the groundwork for its future growth. The village was predominantly agrarian until the 1840s when the discovery of marble turned the town’s fortunes. Marble quarrying became the major industry of Danby, leading to an architectural transformation. Most buildings in the village were constructed on marble foundations, with Greek Revival architecture becoming the style of choice.
In 1851, the arrival of the railroad marked another significant turning point for Danby Village. It soon eclipsed Danby Corners as the economic and civic hub of the town. The district expanded, centering around Main Street and the junction with Mount Tabor Avenue, extending south beyond Depot Street and north nearly to Creamery Brook Road. Today, the district boasts 83 buildings, most of which are historically significant.
Among these structures are prominent civic buildings like the library, fire station, and two churches. The Congregational church, dating back to around 1838, showcases early Gothic features, adding to the architectural diversity of the area. While Greek Revival is the predominant style, the district also features buildings in the Italianate and Queen Anne styles, reflecting the evolving tastes and prosperity of the community.
The Danby Village Historic District was officially recognized for its historical significance when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This designation helps preserve the unique character and stories of the village, ensuring that visitors can continue to explore and appreciate its rich history.
