The museum was born from the passion of Herm Rowland Jr., the former CEO of the Jelly Belly Candy Company, who purchased several military vehicles at an auction but needed help getting them operational. Enter Geoff Lippman, a skilled auto restorer and land developer from Florida, who was brought in to breathe life into these historical machines. This collaboration led to the creation of the American Armory Museum on Abernathy Road, a testament to the dedication of preserving military history.
Among the museum’s remarkable collection are 80 to 90 military vehicles, including tanks, motorcycles, and trucks, many of which are still operational. One of the standout pieces is the Super Mack Prime Mover, a massive 7.5-ton truck from the 1940s, one of only ten remaining in the world and one of three that still runs on its original power source. This behemoth was designed by Mack Trucks and used by the U.S. Army to haul heavy artillery during and after World War II.
Visitors can also marvel at General George S. Patton’s jeep, specially built for him by Francis Sanza, who served as Patton’s driver during World War II. The jeep is a piece of history on wheels, having been part of Patton’s command and a fixture in parades celebrating Independence Day in Fairfield.
The museum continues to evolve, with new exhibits under construction, including a tunnel that will feature an Arabic policeman’s vest and a scene from the 2019 death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Another exciting addition is a room designed to resemble Iraq, offering a contemporary context to the museum’s historical narrative.
