Welcome to Bettendorf Castle, a unique architectural gem perched on a bluff overlooking Fox River Grove, Illinois. It all began in 1916 when Theodore Bettendorf, a 17-year-old immigrant from Luxembourg, arrived in America with a vision inspired by the 11th-century Vianden Castle back in his homeland.
During the Great Depression, Bettendorf purchased land along what is now Route 14. With an eye for detail and a heart full of passion, he began transforming his modest three-room house into a grand castle. Over the next 36 years, he dedicated his nights and weekends to building this labor of love, a scaled-down version of Vianden Castle. With a steady hand and an indomitable spirit, Bettendorf constructed parapet walls, a drawbridge, and lofty turrets, using stone he mined from the bluff and gathered from nearby fields. His Model T truck was not just for transport; it became a vital tool in hauling heavy materials and lifting stones into place.
By 1951, the castle was a magnificent sight, complete with a moat, wishing well, and even a whimsical outdoor garderobe. Bettendorf’s skillful use of the slip-form method of wall building, a technique typically reserved for silos and grain elevators, is evident in the fortress’s enduring strength and beauty.
The castle’s story doesn’t end with its construction. In recent years, the current owner, Michael Strohl, has faced challenges in sharing this historical landmark with the public due to zoning regulations. Nevertheless, the castle continues to receive recognition for its historical significance, recently earning a plaque from the McHenry County Historical Society.
