Welcome to Fuquay-Varina, a unique spot in North Carolina where two towns’ histories converge into one fascinating story. Fuquay-Varina, as we know it today, was formed in 1963 when the towns of Fuquay Springs and Varina merged. But let’s rewind to understand how these two communities came to be.
The story begins in the 1800s with the discovery of the healing mineral spring by a French veteran of the Revolutionary War, William Fuquay. He purchased the land surrounding the spring, and it quickly gained popularity as a health resort, drawing visitors seeking the medicinal benefits of its waters. This led to the establishment of Fuquay Springs, as hotels and other amenities sprang up to cater to visitors.
Not far away, another community was growing around the Raleigh & Augusta Airline Railroad. This area, initially called Sippihaw, changed its name to Varina in the late 19th century. The name Varina is believed to have originated from a local postmaster’s wife, Varina Howell Davis, who was named after the wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
As the 20th century dawned, both towns flourished in their own right. Fuquay Springs became a commercial hub with bustling agriculture, particularly tobacco farming, while Varina thrived with its railroad connections. Despite their proximity, the towns maintained distinct identities.
The two towns’ paths crossed during the Great Depression. With the economic hardships of the era, combining resources made sense, leading to their merger in 1963, creating the town known today as Fuquay-Varina.
